It's not Amazon's coveted HQ2, but a project under way in West Deptford Township is expected to be good news for job seekers in the region.
Amazon is constructing a 650,000-ssquare-foot fulfillment center on Mantua Grove Road, according to company spokeswoman Rachael Lighty.
When operations begin, the center will employ 1,000 full-time workers, she said.
Construction is already well under way on the massive building at 240 Mantua Grove Road on a 60-acre tract, just east of Interstate 295.
Amazon will lease the building. The fulfillment center will handle smaller items that are available for sale online on Amazon.com.
"We are excited about our upcoming facility in West Deptford and our ability to create more than 1,000 full-time jobs for residents in the region," Lighty said.
Amazon officials aren't yet ready to announce an estimated date for the opening of the fulfillment center or when the company will begin to recruit employees.
The e-commerce giant already has a presence in Gloucester County, with one fulfillment center and two sorting centers in operation.
Across the state Amazon has eight fulfillment centers and the two sorting centers which employee an estimated 14,000 workers.
Lighty said Amazon chose West Deptford because it believes the area has a "dedicated workforce" and there was "great local support" from the township.
"We are thrilled to join the community and look forward to building relationships and being a good neighbor for years to come," Lighty said.
Amazon said the new full-time employees receive "competitive hourly wages" along with a benefits package that includes healthcare, a 401(k) plan and stock awards, maternity and parental leave tuition reimbursement.
Last year when the Seattle, Washington-based company said it was seeking a site for a second company headquarters which became referred to as HQ2, Gloucester County made a bid to host the project.
After sorting through the 200-plus proposal received, Amazon announced Newark was the only New Jersey finalist in the location search.
Neighboring Philadelphia and New York City were also being considered, the company announced, as potential locations for HQ2 which the company promises will produce some 50,000 high-paying jobs along with billions in other investments.
Officials from West Deptford and Gloucester County didn't return inquiries about how the new local fulfillment center would impact the area.
