We are living in a time of deep uncertainty – politically and economically. As we look to the future, one thing is abundantly clear: if we are to navigate the challenges ahead and unlock the opportunities waiting on the other side, leadership is the key.
I was recently reminded of the power of leadership during a celebration of former Gov. Tom Kean’s 90th birthday. As we honored his legacy, one quote from the governor stood out and resonated deeply: “Success comes from bipartisanship, inclusion, and compromise.” These principles are not just noble ideals – they are practical necessities for moving our state forward.
New Jersey has always been a place of resilience, diversity, and potential. But today, more than ever, we need our leaders to come together—across party lines, sectors, and communities—to confront the pressing issues facing us.
The coming months will be critical.
We’re staring down a range of challenges including potential deep federal cuts to state programs, the impact of tariffs, the contentious fiscal 2026 state budget, the lack of a cohesive New Jersey economic plan, the highly concerned business community and uncertainty surrounding NJ Transit labor negotiations. We’re preparing to co-host the FIFA World Cup in 2026 – and witnessing growing concern about a possible economic recession.
Overlaying all of this is political uncertainty: an election season where the entire state Assembly is up for re-election, and speculation swirls around who New Jersey’s next governor will be—and what direction they will take the state economy.
This kind of uncertainty, both at home and nationally, does not just affect policy debates. It freezes decision-making in the private sector. Businesses hesitate. Investments slow. Economic momentum stalls. Uncertainty is the enemy of growth – and we desperately need economic growth.
New Jersey has all the ingredients for success: outstanding assets, prestigious demographics and geographic location. This positions us better than other states to overcome challenges. The tools for success are here. We need our leaders to bring everything together and formulate a plan in this very troublesome environment.
We must embrace a new approach to our decision making to make New Jersey more economically competitive. We cannot afford to fall behind our competitor states. The magnitude of the challenges mandate this different governance style. Our leaders must recognize the successful outcomes Gov. Kean realized employing his three basic tenants: bipartisanship, inclusion, and compromise. That type of honorable governance can work again.
Lead with vision. Lead with unity. Lead with a focus on the future, not the past. The path ahead will not always be clear, but with strong leadership rooted in compromise and inclusion, we can steer New Jersey through these uncertain waters and toward a brighter, more prosperous future.
