Cornerstone New Jersey members visited the U.S. Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Lab on Sept. 17 for a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the world's leading research and development facilities for fusion technology.
Scientists at the lab are working to replicate what happens on the sun, through its efforts to "fuse" super-heated hydrogen gas atoms to create a clean, sustainable and possibly limitless energy source for the world.
During the tour, Laboratory Director Stewart Prager called fusion the "ultimate game changer" for solving the world's energy needs. "It's clean - no carbon emissions; it's safe - no radioactive fallout or waste; and because it uses the most abundant element on earth - hydrogen - the supply is virtually inexhaustible."
